Frequently Asked Questions About Massage Therapy
Why is the pricing higher for a 60- or 90-minute massage than for a 120-minute session?
My goal is to work approximately 10 hours per day. Without adjusting my 60-minute and 90-minute session rates, I would need to work nearly 12 hours to generate the same income that a full schedule of two-hour sessions would provide in about 9.5 hours. This difference is due to the 30-minute turnaround time needed between clients to change linens, sanitize the space, and prepare for the next appointment.
Regardless of the length of the massage, the same 30-minute changeover between clients is required. That preparation time is built into the price of each massage, which is why shorter sessions have a slightly higher hourly rate than longer sessions.
How long should I wait after surgery before starting lymphatic drainage therapy?
The appropriate time to begin lymphatic drainage therapy after surgery depends on the type of procedure and your surgeon’s recommendations. In many cases, clients are cleared to begin gentle lymphatic drainage 2–7 days after surgery, while others may be advised to wait up to 1–2 weeks.
What level of massage do I need?
Massage levels are based on the amount of pressure and intensity you prefer, ranging from gentle relaxation to extremely deep tissue work. At Dig Deep, the levels are designed to help match the treatment to your comfort level and goals.
- Level 1–2: Swedish-style relaxation massage focused on stress relief and gentle muscle work.
- Level 3–4: A balanced massage combining relaxation techniques with moderate deep tissue work.
- Level 5: Deep tissue pressure—deeper than most average massages but still within a comfortable range.
- Level 5–7: Very deep tissue work targeting deeper muscle layers and chronic tension.
- Level 8–10: Extremely deep work designed for athletes, bodybuilders, or people who regularly need very intense muscle therapy.
If you’re unsure which level to book, most new clients start with Level 1–5, and the pressure can always be adjusted during your session based on how your body responds that day. Every massage is customized to your needs, so you’ll always receive the right level of pressure for you.
How often should I get a massage?
This depends on your goals and lifestyle. For general relaxation and stress relief, many clients schedule a massage once a month. If you are dealing with chronic tension, pain, or intense physical activity, every 2–3 weeks may be more beneficial. Your therapist can also recommend a schedule based on how your body responds to treatment.
Please arrive relaxed and hydrated and try to avoid heavy meals right before your appointment. Because of allergies, please do not wear perfume, cologne, scented lotions, or other fragrances. I am also extremely allergic to cats, so please try to arrive in clothing that is free of cat hair. And please do not pet your cats before your appointment. Thank you so much!
What’s the difference between deep tissue and Swedish massage?
Swedish massage focuses on relaxation using lighter, flowing techniques that improve circulation and reduce stress. Deep tissue massage works deeper into the muscle layers to release chronic tension, knots, and tightness. At Dig Deep, sessions can range from gentle relaxation to extremely deep pressure depending on your needs and the massage level you select.
Does deep tissue massage hurt?
Deep tissue massage can feel intense at times, especially when working on tight or restricted muscles. However, it should never feel unbearable or painful. Pressure can always be adjusted during your session to ensure the treatment remains effective while still comfortable for you.
What should I do after a deep tissue massage?
After a deep tissue session, it’s normal to feel slightly sore or tender for a day or two as your muscles release tension. Drinking plenty of water, gentle stretching, and allowing your body time to rest can help your muscles recover and maximize the benefits of the massage.
Spending some time in a sauna after your massage can also be extremely beneficial, as it may help your body relax further and support the natural process of flushing out toxins that were released during the session.
How early should I arrive for my massage appointment?
Arriving 5–10 minutes early is recommended. This allows time to check in, discuss any areas of concern, and begin your session relaxed without feeling rushed.
What should I wear to a massage appointment?
Wear comfortable clothing that is easy to change in and out of. During your massage, you will be properly draped with sheets at all times to ensure comfort and privacy.
What does lymphatic drainage massage do?
Lymphatic drainage therapy is a gentle technique that supports the body’s natural lymphatic system, which helps move fluid and waste products through the body. It can help reduce swelling, support recovery after surgery, and encourage healthy fluid movement throughout the tissues.
How many lymphatic drainage sessions do I need after surgery?
The number of sessions varies depending on the procedure and how your body heals. Many clients schedule multiple sessions during the first few weeks of recovery to help manage swelling and support healing. Your therapist can help recommend a schedule based on your individual recovery process.
